Aaron Douglas

1899-1979

Upon moving to Harlem Aaron Douglas became the illustrator for The Crisis and Opportunity, two black magazines. Aaron Douglas was the preeminent artist of the Harlem Renaissance. He was considered the Father of Black American arts at the time. Douglas was influenced by African art but fused it with European art, which resulted in geometric symbolism. In the late 1930s, Douglass became a professor at Fisk University where he would eventually start its art department.
