Willie Cole
b. 1955
The art of Willie Cole embodies the philosophies of several stylistic movements including Dada, Surrealism, and Postmodernism. Taking readymade objects and fashioning them into original and derivative sculptures, Cole has been known to turn water bottles into chandeliers and high-heeled shoes into sculptures. These are not arbitrary artworks, but they speak to African American and African culture. For example, the framed steam iron markings that resemble African masks speak to African Diasporic experiences as domestic workers.
