Meta Warrick Fuller
1877-1968
As an artist during the Harlem Renaissance, Fuller was known as one of the most renowned black artist of the time. She was a protege of the regaled sculptor Auguste Rodin while studying in Paris, France. Not unlike many other African Americans of the time, Fuller experienced racism even in France. But emerging from Philadelphia's conscious black community in the late 1800s, Fuller was influenced to create art that embodied social commentary. One of Fuller’s more well known sculptures is Mary Turner. The artwork depicts the image of a woman who was lynched after protesting the lynching of her husband the previous day. Fuller’s gift as a sculptor is in the way she depicts sensitivity with the form of her material.
