James Van Der Zee
1886-1983

James Van Der Zee created some of the most compelling photographs during the Harlem Renaissance. He conveyed an alternative image of middle class dwellers for the world to see. His photographs were mainly taken in his studio with props to signify social status. From the 1920 to the 1930s VanDerZee created hundreds of photographs including portraits of personalities like Marcus Garvey, Countee Cullen, and Bill “Bojangles” Robinson.
