Henry Ossawa Tanner
1859-1937
As the first internationally acclaimed African American artist, Henry Osawa Tanner, was accepted into the official art exhibition of the Academie des beaux Artist’s Salon in 1896. In 1879 Tanner enrolled in the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. In 1891, he moved to Paris, France and spent the rest of his life there due to the racism he experience in the United States. Tanner might be best known for his painting, "The Banjo Lesson."
