Carrie Mae Weems

As a recipient of the MacArthur Genius Award, Carrie Mae Weems has proven her mastery to the world. She started her career as an artist with dance, but while working as a labor organizer, she began taking pictures to record the movement in the 1970s. Weem’s work has been featured in exhibitions around the world. Her most influential work is probably the Kitchen Table Series, a series of black and white photographs about life that happens around the kitchen table. Weem’s work also explores issues about feminism, racism, politics, and identity.
